The mission of the Athens Photographic Project is to facilitate recovery for individuals living with mental illness by providing the tools for photography and self-expression within an encouraging environment, and empowering participants in their rediscovery of identity, confidence and hope. Andrew Angelson, Sandy White and Paul Reininga are all mentors for the APP. A mentor is a former student in the APP that now volunteers to help current students. The mentors tell the story and the majority of the photographs are from the participants.

Love, Loss and Land

For years Dave Bircher worked at a day job and would come home at night to manage the farm and spend time with his wife, Connie, and their two daughters. After Connie died of breast cancer, Dave was devastated by the loss so he quit farming and started working at Ohio University. One day while Bircher was working on the grounds crew he met Nancy on his lunch break. Soon after, they married, retired from Ohio University and went back to farming full time. Bircher wrote a poem in honor of his first wife Connie who died of cancer.

Fighting Challenges

Meredith Shumrick, an Ohio University Army ROTC candidate, struggles to pass her physical fitness training program. It is a tough challenge, using both physical and mental strength, but she is determined. With the support of her friends and other candidates, she overcomes the battle.

On the Path

Cecilia Rinaldi and Deb Bibler own and operate On the Path in the community of Eclipse, a holistic health and radical forgiveness center. Rinaldi and Bibler use such techniques as Reiki and Cranio-Sacral Reflexology with the goal of treating the whole person--mind, body and spirit.

Snake Charmer

To many people, Dave Sagan is simply known as “The Snake Guy.” Sagan has earned this reputation based on his extensive knowledge regarding domestic and exotic snakes. This knowledge is shared with the residents of Southeastern Ohio through Sagan’s role as the director of the Hocking Valley Nature Center. The center is owned by Hocking College where Sagan also serves as an instructor.
